A family history written
in 1958 by Philip Baumunk's great-granddaughter Edna chronicles that
Philip's children Peter, John and Mag emigrated from Germany in the middle
of the 1800's.
The three siblings had
been born in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany in the 1820's. Their arrival
in America is reported by another source as 1853, however, the passenger
list of the Augusta, arriving at New York on September 22, 1858 lists
a Peter Baumunk , Johanne Baumunk and Margaretta (often shortened to Mag)
Meyer. It could be that Mag was coming to America as a widow.
The ages listed are accurate for the trio and their country of origin was
listed as "Hesse" (aka Hessen).
Regardless, it is known
that Johnne had a son, John Adam Baumunk who was born in Wyandot County,
Ohio and moved to the open plains of Kansas after 1880, spending the
remainder of this long life farming near Wichita in Sumner and Sedgwick
Counties. John Adam is buried next to his wife Candace Alma Barlow in
the Mulvane Cemetery in Belle Plaine, Sumner, Kansas.
More work is yet to be
done to verify our Baumunk roots as Baumunk was not an uncommon name in the
Hessen region and there are other John and Peter Baumunks who emigrated and
lived in America in the 1800s. Also, due to the language barriers, the
Baumunk name has appeared on various lists and census as Baumonk, Baumann,
Baumong and others.
In fact, in the 1880
Federal Census for Hancock County, Ohio, John Adam Baumunks parent's,
Johanne and Barbra are listed as "Idiotic" and "Insane" respectively.
This could explain much about my family, however it seems more likely an
issue with the census-taker as the Baumunk's Bavarian-born neighbors
received the same notations.
